How To Build Pecs

How to build pecsHaving a big chest helps turn heads. It instantly shows that you work out and is a sign of authority. Learning how to build pecs doesn’t have to be hard, in fact it’s much easier than most people will tell you.

Firstly, though let’s look at what the pectorals are used for so that we can understand how to build pecs. The pectorals are the largest muscle group your upper body; they are pushing muscles which grow best when you use exercises that push away from your body using arms and shoulders.

There are really 3 major components to the chest muscles; upper, middle and lower pectorals. The best way how to build pecs is to use exercises that exploit all 3 parts of the chest.

Let’s move on to see just how you can build a big chest in no time…..

Bench Press

Without a doubt, the most popular and most effective exercise for the chest is bench press. Universally favored, the bench press can be used in a variety of ways using different angles, bars, grips and weights.

By far the most effective type of bench press is the Olympic barbell bench press. This exercise is used by powerlifters world wide for one very good reason; it builds strength and packs on muscle around your chest!

To help us build pecs in the shortest amount of time we will incorporate all 3 angles of the barbell bench press; incline, flat and decline. This way all the muscles in our chest are worked which will encourage them to grow very rapidly.

If you have never performed the bench press exercise before you are really missing out on a very productive exercise. The basic setup revolves around you laying on a bench with the barbell above you. Slowly, you bring the barbell down to your chest using your tricep muscles to support and then explode with your chest to push the weight back up.

Parallel Bar Dips

Another fantastic, albeit underused pec building exercise are parallel bar dips. Before the bench press gained popularity dips were ALWAYS the exercise of choice for developing a huge chest. However, when bench press gained popularity the dip was cast aside. This was a huge mistake!

Take a look on the internet for pictures of people like Reg Park, Steve Reeves and others who were strong supporters of dips. You can see that they had huge chests from doing dips regularly.

Dips are great for working your lower and inner chest, helping you get that ‘pumped’ look whenever you wear a t-shirt.

Dumbbell Chest Press

The dumbbell chest press is very similar to the barbell bench press, with the obvious difference being you use dumbbells instead of a barbell. This exercise should be a staple in anybody’s training regime as it can help you develop a large chest in no time at all.

The dumbbell chest press gives you more freedom with the weights so you can bring the dumbbells down in a different fashion to how you would for a barbell bench press exercise. Many bodybuilders are quoted as saying that the true way for how to build pecs is actually the dumbbell chest press and NOT barbell bench press. Whether this is right or wrong is debatable but the fact remains that you should definitely implement both forms of exercise for the best way to build pecs.
